Due to the nature of the game, we need to use global lighting. Our initial plans were to take steps to preserve the core spirit as much as possible. This means; we switched from 3D modeling to 2D design. Both the nostalgic feel in the visuals is preserved, and the grotesque nature of the character is still noticeable. As we progress, we will be making several advancements that we won’t share in the development logs. In the next update, you will see a major change in the project, even if you don’t notice it.

To diversify the combat beyond just 3 different attacks, we decided to add skills to the game. However, this addition will not restrict you to specific classes like in classic MMORPGs. The skills will be unlocked through points you allocate to different skill trees focused on strength, endurance, and agility. These include both active and passive skills that enhance critical damage during certain rounds or increase your movement speed when you take a step. Of course, many skills also have drawbacks, and balancing these is our job ??

Repair Mechanic and Upgrading

One of the mechanics that sets our game apart from simple rock-paper-scissors and keeps you most engaged is the Blacksmith mechanic. Instead of constantly chasing new items, you will need to focus on strengthening your existing equipment. No matter what armor you wear, it can be upgraded up to +4. This upgrade will reveal different features of the armor in higher levels, while at lower levels it will simply increase the armor level. To upgrade a piece of equipment, you will need some upgrade materials. You will get these materials by dismantling extra armor you have. And this dismantling process also goes through the blacksmith ?? So it plays a crucial role in the game.

Armor Fragmentation and Blacksmith

We have started designing the equipment repair and upgrade system, which is one of the fundamental mechanics of the game. We began with plans for 10 slots in the armor stage, 1 slot for weapons, and an additional 2 slots for jewelry. Just as the character evolves from a simple slave to a champion gladiator, equipment sets will also evolve from basic cloth and wooden swords to well-stitched cloth with sharpened stone swords and eventually heavy armor protected by iron plates. Equipment will be obtained from chests that you get as a chance after each game or by leveling up and completing quests. If a player acquires multiple pieces of the same armor, they can later dismantle it at the blacksmith to upgrade their equipment. The blacksmith part is very important ?? because you can lose your armor in battle, and this will be explained in detail when we start the Blacksmith update..

Character Appearance

Perhaps the most important part for us, we have made the first developments regarding the character aspect and concluded how much customization will be possible. We have prepared the initial draft of our character. To match both the story and create a distinctive character, we kept various customization options such as different hairstyles, beards, mustaches, body types, and skin tones available on a single face. Since our game's story involves a character evolving from a mere slave to a great gladiator, we are thinking of making the initial version of our character someone who is muscular but not very handsome, rather than a charismatic and highly muscular gladiator.

Attack Mechanics Planning

  • v0.02

We have fully decided on the attack and defense mechanics that will shape the core of our game. We have opted for simple attack and defense options that are not too detailed but fit perfectly with our envisioned structure. Essentially, the mechanics involve attacks from above, from the middle, and from below, and defenses from above, from the middle, and from below. If players can predict the direction their opponent is attacking from, they will successfully block and receive no damage; otherwise, they will take high damage. The main mechanic that differentiates this from rock-paper-scissors is that each weapon set (axe, sword, short sword, dagger, etc.) has a direction in which it is strong. For example, long swords deal extra damage to attacks from above, while spears deal more damage from the body. So, we can say it's a rock-paper-scissors game with a twist ??
